Wayne Willgress, who is just outside of the top 16 at number 17, was hoping to go one further stage in this event as he stepped out onto the rink to face against England’s Perry Martin. Both players were eager to do well out there today and so into set one we went. It was Martin that got off to a flying start and left Willgress standing as he powered his way to an 8,1 lead by the end of the fifth. Willgress was just not getting to grips with the carpet and managed to grab another single but it was Martin that sealed the first set with a further triple and a single to take the first set 12,3.
Into the second set and Willgress had settled a little but Martin was still really dominating the match. Willgress persevered and managed to level the score to 4 all in end six. End seven and Willgress was getting steadier and found some form as he took a further single off Martin to go one ahead. End eight and it was Martin that closed the head down and played a great bowl to take a double to now go one ahead of Willgress. Final end and Willgress managed to lay two shots to force a tie break but again it was Martin that denied him this small chance as he again played superb bowls and shut down Willgress into only receiving a single so it was a tied end at six all and it is Martin that goes through to the quarter finals.
