In the second match of the Open Pairs, 32 year old local Norfolk bowler Wayne Willgress teamed with Kent’s Perry Martin and after a thrilling, quality exchange against Melton’s Les Gillett and Jason Greenslade from the Sully club in Wales after came through a neck and neck head to head for an 8-7, 7-8, 2-0 tie break victory.
There was virtually nothing to separate the teams with both sets tied at 7-7 after the penultimate ends – where the English duo counted the vital shot on the last end of the first set while Gillett and Greenslade were slightly fortunate to nab the set winner with their last bowl on the ninth end of the second to take the match to a sudden best of three tie break decider.
With the first end against Willgress and Martin, the English skip played a perfect connection shot with just the correct weight to push the jack through the head to their waiting back bowl and take first blood and they added the second end to progress to their second round match on Sunday afternoon against earlier winners Ellen Falkner and Greg Harlow.
Martin was quick to heap praise on his partner, saying “Wayne was fantastic. He settled in right from the very start. In the first set he continually had Les under pressure and over the piece I think we deserved to win – we did enough! “
“Our match plan paid off ” added Willgress. “I was pretty relaxed out there and I knew the jack length would be crucial. That was half the battle and I knew exactly where I wanted it”.
He added “Perry’s last bowl on the first end of the tie break was absolutely perfect in every detail – it was the bowl of the match for me”.
