The ‘Just’ 2018 World Indoor Open Singles Championship at Potters Resort kicked off this morning with a second round match between Norfolk’s legendary Mervyn King and Cambridge star Nick Brett, both of whom were looking for a win here this morning.
Into the first round and the battle commenced between these two exponents of the draw shot and it was King that beat Brett to the draw. Both players were on the edge and neither was getting ahead in any big way. It was end four that King stole a double away from Brett to give him a 1,4 lead. Brett played a superb bowl in the fifth end to take a single but then King just literally played superbly to take the next three ends and set 2,8.
Brett started the second set with a double on the first end, King drew a brilliant single on the next end but it was Brett that then responded over the next three ends taking a double and two singles in quick succession to take the lead 6,1. But then King upped his game and it ws Brett on the receiving end as King took a single, then a double and yet another single to amend the score line to 6,5 by the close of end eight. All to play for in the final end and it was King that came out with a single to have a set draw at 6 all and therefore the match. King goes through to the quarter finals on Friday here in the International Arena at 7.30pm.
