The irish get over the first hurdle

10 January, 2020

It was the Australian brothers of Dale and Dean McWhinney up against the Irish pairing of Marty Trainor and Andy Duncan in the first of the afternoons session of pairs matches here at Potters Resort in the ‘Just’ 2020 World Indoor Championships.

First set it took the Australians a little while to get to grips with the blue portable rink but they did not give way too much and it was only a one shot differenve by the close of end six at 4,5 to the Irish duo. Trainor and Duncan though managed to take a single on the final end to take the first set 4,6.

Second set was a similar story - the Australians fought hard but it was the Irish duo that were the better as they took a 1,10 lead by the close of the fourth end. The Australians though did not give up and took four shots over the next two ends but that still left them with a tough task of looking for at least six shots in the last end. They only managed to snaffle four and it was Trainor and Duncan that took the second set and match to go through to the next round where they face England’s Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney later tonight. Match scoreline was 4,6 - 9,10.
