Second match today in a packed arena was Robert Paxton and Ellen Falkner, both from England and both with plenty of Titles between them with Paxton having previously won both the Pairs and Mixed pairs titles and Falkner who has previously won the Mixed Pairs and the Ladies Matchplay titles. They were up against Scotland’s Darren Burnett and Julie Forrest who also had a host of experience with Burnett having won the World Singles, Pairs and Mixed Pairs in recent years and of course, Forrest, who is one of Scotland’s most accomplished female players.
The first set saw a slow start as all players got to grips with the rink and at two all on end three it was Burnett/Forrest that added another three to their score over the next two ends to take a three shot lead. It was Paxton/Falkner though that took the initiative over the next two ends, Paxton in particular playing some really good bowls and they took a three on end six followed by a double on end seven to take the first set 7,5.
Into the second set and following on from their success they edged out both Forrest and Burnett over the first four ends to take a 5,1 lead. End five and Burnett played a couple of great bowls to take a double and close the gap but Paxton in responded taking a double in end six. This left Burnett/Forrest looking for a difficult five count to force a tie break but Paxton put a stop to it and only allowed them a single so it was set and match to Paxton and Falkner. 7,5 – 7,4 and they go through to the semi finals on Sunday afternoon.
