King lives up to his name

16 January, 2020

First match of the day here in the International Arena at Potters Resort in the ‘Just’ 2020 World Idoor Open Singles Championship was between Norfolk’s Mervyn King, former Indoor Champion and World Ranked 11 and Craig Tinker of New Zealand who has several state and National titles to his credit.

Tinker with a quick joke with King

It was an interesting match where the ‘King’ of the draw shot who favoured the shorter jack length was up against a quick player who favoured the longer jack. The first two ends as the players settled in saaw them taking a single each, end three and four though it was King that came out on top taking a single and a double count. End five and a great last bowl from Tinker with a bit of weight saw him take a single but then it was the deadly accurate drawing of King that demolished Tinker with two three’s and double to take the first set 12,2.

Second set and a still smiling Tinker took a single on the first end and fought diligently and hard to make Mervyn show the arena audience why he is rightly called ‘King’ of the draw shot. End after end he calmy drew his way through taking the next three ends to go 5-1 ahead. Ends six and seven it was still Tinker that was not giving up as he kept plugging away at King and succeeded in taking two singles but it was King that took a great double on end seven to seal the second set and match. 7,3
