In the first match of the day here at Potters Resort in the ‘Just’ 2018 World Indoor Championships it was Jamie Chestney up against Chris Gale. Gale had had a late call up as Danny Denison had damaged his leg and withdrawn from the Open Singles.
The first set went Chestney’s way as Gale struggled to get the pace of the rink to start with and Gale said, “ I struggled at first to get my pace but concentrated on my line knowing I had a second set to come”. Chestney took the first set 10,1.
The second set was a different story as Gale found his pace. The match developed into a good fight between them and by end 5 it was 5 all. Into end six and Gale played a superb shot to clinch 3 shots and followed again on end 6 to take another single, giving him a lead of 5-9. Chestney fought back hard and took a single on end 8 but in the final end Gale denied him the shots he needed and the set went to Gale 8,9. Into the tie break and it was Chestney that raised his game and beat off Gale on the first and second ends to take the tie break and match.
Chestney goes into the second round on Tuesday 23rd where he faces Scotland’s Darren Burnett.
