DEFENDING CHAMPION REMAINS IN CONTENTION TO RETAIN ‘JUST’ OPEN PAIRS TITLE

10 January, 2021

Potters Ambassador Greg Harlow and his ‘substitute’ partner Ellen Falkner MBE (Nicky Brett had to withdraw because he broke his wrist) came through a roller coaster quarter final match this afternoon against local Norfolk star Wayne Willgress and Kent’s Perry Martin.

Falkner and Harlow dropped the first set 4-10. They had led 3-2, then only scored on one of remaining six ends.

However they put that behind them and led all the way in the second, getting over the finishing line 8-5 to take the match to a tiebreak decider.

On the first end of a dramatic shoot out, Harlow played a runner and ditched the jack and Martin immediately responded with a draw to the edge of the ditch. Once again the defending champion did the business, reaching the resting bowl and turning out of play and taking the first end count.

The second end was equally spectacular, with the advantage swaying one way and then the other, before Willgress and Martin gave themselves a lifeline by the merest of margins to take the match to a last end sudden decider.

This too was full of theatre, but when the dust settled, the verdict went to Falkner and Harlow 2-1.

In tomorrow’s semi-final clash they go head to head against Simon Skelton and Mike Stepney but the winner will have to wait for a further week until the title is decided when the final is played on Monday 18th January.
